Standalone antivirus programs significantly
enhance the blocking and eliminating Internet threats. Operating system software, (Windows 7, Vista, XP, Apple OS) are not designed or equipped to do. We suggest opting for the
most comprehensive antivirus protection available.
The frustration you will experience
from a breach or virus assault is very costly in terms of both your time and money. We suggest not leaving yourself vulnerable to attack by free antivirus programs that do not update often enough or Internet Service providers which provide only scaled down protection- at best.
We do not recommend services
provided by your Internet Service provider since they make you wait, go down and
do not protect you from local threats, such as USB drives or CD's while off-line.
It is preferable that you can take control
our own settings. It does take a bit of time to teach the
programs and operating systems your preferences. It is time well
spent.
Leaving your security setting on default only makes your computer
more vulnerable on the Internet superhighway.
Intruders do target the "default
settings" on systems and modems/ routers. It is the easiest way to compromise a large
number of systems. Make
a minimum of one selection that is not "default" after installing
your security program and modem/ router. This will make your system different
from the vast "vulnerable" majority.
Review your Personal Firewall settings to make sure you are not giving "automatic" access
to suspect software. If you are not sure of an individual entries origin or purpose,
select "Block All". You may want to leave on "Automatic" for Symantec
and Norton resources, especially applications and utilities you use on a regular basis,
such a Adobe Reader, etc.
Make sure your Norton firewall is turned "on" (IS 2011/12 only). Do not operate your Norton firewall
at the same time as the basic Windows® firewall. It will cause system problems
and slow down your Internet connections substantially. Your LiveUpdates should
be are turned "on" to always
stay protected against new viruses unless your system administrator does them
for you or advises you to the contrary.
Review your browser settings to check of which programs are "Internet enabled, especially the ones that for allow interactive outside access to your system.
Clear your cache and delete temporary files on a weekly basic or after using a financial transaction program- bank, credit card, purchases, etc.
Internet Explorer Version 9- Click on Tools> Delete Browsing History and tick mark all of the items, except you may want to "Preserve Favorite website data." You will see a confirmation in a yellow stripe at the bottom of your page when complete- click on the "x" in this box to close. Exit your browser and re-start it.
Version 8- Click on Tools> Delete Browsing History. Check mark Temporary Internet Files and History.
In
Internet Explorer 8 & 9 , open your browser and select: Tools> Manage Add-Ons> Enable
or Disable. Review each item and decide on which programs you use on a regular
basis. Disable the rest. Should this cause a problem with normal operations,
you can always come back in here and enable the item again. Yes, it is a process
of elimination. Many free intrusive software programs and add-ons take advantage of this
loophole to gain unfettered access to your system.
